The professional version of SymmetricDS 3.13 database replication software was released, and it contains some great new features and improvements. There are also some lesser-known features that I’ll reveal, which turn out to be quite useful. Let’s take a quick look at what’s new in SymmetricDS 3.13!
First and foremost is a new look and feel to the user interface that is both modern and accessible. The user can select either a light or dark variant to match their preferred envrionment. Screens use lazy loading to conserve memory and maintain responsiveness under heavy data loads. While menus and screens follow a familiar layout, several visual improvements were made to streamline the user experience, such as moving heavy operations to the background and indicating progress in the header.
Expanding the support for log-based replication, PostgreSQL users can now choose between either trigger or log-based change data capture. Each approach has different benefits, and now users have the flexibility to choose the right replication approach. The seamless architecture means users can setup and configure replication the same way with the same set of features, including table selection, vertical subsets, horizontal subsets, conflict management, and data transformation.
Full replication support is available for Azure Cosmos and MongoDB, enabling change data capture and bi-directional replication with other platforms including relational databases. NoSQL databases are useful for applications that need automatic scaling and partitioning of data. With SymmetricDS, data can be integrated across enterprise databases systems, making it possible to leverage NoSQL databases while avoiding vendor lock-in.
Load-only support is available for Elasticsearch and OpenSearch platforms, which makes it possible to synchronize data from other platforms. By feeding near-real-time data changes from SymmetricDS, you can consolidate data and enable powerful search functionality. SymmetricDS integrates into the data pipeline that includes other data collection and visualization tools available in the Elastic Stack.
Here are some useful features that might be missed if you weren’t looking for them.
The startup was improved to be quicker and more informative. If the software version hasn’t changed, it now skips database checks, resulting in shorter downtimes. The web console lets you login as soon as any engine is connected, and it loads session information in the background instead of waiting. The status of engine initialization is now shown in the engines drop-down.
More console events were added to track user activity around configuration changes and security events. Advanced filtering was added to the console events screen, which can be used to generate and export a report. An extension point called IConsoleEventListener was added to receive console events as they happen, which could be used to respond to certain events or send them to a central logging application.
